Luka Rhys Delaney was born in 1991 in Canberra, the Capital City of Australia to young and upcoming politician, Kenneth Delaney, and his secretary (that he was cheating on his wife with amidst a torrid affair), Katie Swinton. Because his profile was of utmost concern with ambitions to aim to make the Prime Minister's cabinet one day, the last thing Kenneth wanted was his dirty laundry aired in public. With Katie blackmailing him with threats to go to the media about the fact he got her pregnant (on his desk in his campaign office ala Monica Lewinski), Kenneth bought off his wife at the time for a subtle and civil divorce and married Katie in a quickie ceremony. She was only 21 when Luka was born, and with that dodgy upbringing, it wasn't particularly any wonder he had a somewhat confusing life ahead of him.
When Luka was 12 years old, Kenneth uprooted the family to Sydney, Australia, and took Luka out of school away from his friends and all in the name of his political career which had gained much momentum. He set his sights on a parliamentary seat in Sydney, which he one when Luka started high school. It was the move that really sparked Luka's discontent within himself. He was a somewhat shy kid at the time but close to his big sister (or half-sister, born to his father and his ex-wife before he started having affairs at the drop of a hat), Monique, and moving away from her really affected him. They stayed in touch, writing emails and talking on the phone, and it was to Monique that Luka first confided in about the fact he maybe "really liked guys and not girls" when he was fifteen... and one guy in particular he had a crush on: one Jett Wilson. It was Monique who encourage him to explore that if he really felt inside that's who he was. He had been friends with Jett since they started high school together, and with a burst of courage at a party one night a few months after Jett's mum passed away, he kissed Jett (who was really drunk, still grieving his mum and trying to drown out the pain).
Jett kissed back and they ended up in a pretty heavy make-out session on a sunlounge by the pool that really could have gone all the way if Luka hadn't gotten cold feet. What it did was firm his suspicions that he really wasn't into girls and was, in fact, very gay. But he was terrified of coming out, especially with a spate of gay bashings in Sydney in the recent months and the fact his father was on an instrumental political campaign to try to have the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras banned. Jett told him that he didn't have to come out if he didn't want, but he could be whoever he wanted in secret. That night, he and Jett lost their virginities to each other and it was special, something Luka would never forget. They didn't really officially date, but their friendship grew strong, and with the aid of some fake IDs, Jett and Luka would regularly hit Oxford Street, the well-known homosexual district in Sydney, the home of the Mardi Gras and even appeared in the fabulous movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Luka was hooked, and even delved deep inside him to discover he actually had a secret love for cross-dressing in secret, dressing up to hit the gay bars and hooking up as much as he possibly could to express his sexuality openly where he couldn't any other time for fear his father would disapprove and cut him off. That year, after Jett went off to enlist in the Army and moved away to one of the Army bases for training, Luka was dancing in nothing but a glittery silver g-string and angel wings on a float at the Mardi Gras, and he was in his element. Luka had a desperate desire to become an actor, but when he got accepted into NIDA - the National Institute of Dramatic Art - one of the top performing arts schools in Australia, his father said it was a ridiculous ambition and you could "count on one hand the number of successful Aussies in Hollywood" and he apparently had "no hope of making it big" with these preposterous fantasies. It upset Luka beyond belief, feeling physically sick at the thought of having to go to his father's choice of universities to study education or politics, a "good, firm career for a man". Luka wanted to give his father a good, firm kick in the balls. Instead, he got dressed up, complete with make-up, a dress and heels and went to get absolutely trashed in a gay bar crawl.
But it was an awful mistake. He was so drunk, he managed to get sexually assaulted out the back of a bar and then left almost paralytic in the gutter. Someone called and ambulance and he woke up in hospital to his father looming over him. Luka would never forget the look on his face. To this day, he couldn't even remember clearly what he said, but what it boiled down to was that Kenneth refused to have a poof for a son, and that unless he cleaned up his act and got the appalling notions of being a fag out of his head and got over the phase, Luka could expect nothing from the family. In fact, his father went so far as to tell him that he was sending him away to join the Army like Jett where he could remember what it mean to be a real man.
Luka went, if only out of sheer intimidation. He had never been close to his father, who was always away at Parliament in Canberra or busy on some campaign or another. A large piece of Luka died inside him when he arrived at the Army base where Jett was. They ended up in the same unit and Luka quashed his homosexuality deep down inside him, prepared to be an obedient son and make his father proud of him. Jett asked him many times what happened, but Luka could never talk about it without feeling like dry retching. It was just easier to never mention it again. After that, they were deployed to Afghanistan together and that was where things took such an horrific turn, life would never be the same again.
Their battalion was targeted under heavy fire during an attack and they were approached by a suicide bomber in a car. Jett was the one who suspected the car was armed with a bomb, but Luka and five other soldiers had been prepared to fight back. Just as they were going in to defend, the bomber detonated the device, and Jett dove over Luka, grabbing him and body-rolling him away from the explosion. They both got injured, but Luka was the worst at the time. Jett had minor injuries that were treated at the military base hospital, soon sent back to their barracks. Luka suffered a severe head injury with a skull fracture and a shattered knee that needed reconstructive surgery. If Jett hadn't grabbed him, Luka would have been blown to smithereens and killed. They lost three men in their battalion and it was nothing short of a miracle Luka survived. He was discharged on medical grounds and sent back home for surgery and psychological intervention, fearing a trigger of PTSD was inevitable. Jett was awarded a medal of honour and continued on his deployment. But just a couple of months later, he unknowingly stepped on a landmine in another defensive attack and was blown up. He suffered an horrific spinal injury that left him a complete paraplegic and he was flown to New York City to work with a team of the best Spinal Injury Specialists in the world.
Luka never really recovered. He healed from the head injury and had the knee surgery, but he was left with a limp and a lot of pain issues. Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder was clinically proven, and in the few months during his recovery and rehabilitation, he was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. He was on a heavy cocktail of painkillers and more pills were added to the mix to try to control the psychological conditions. He went back home to live with his mother and father, but could never look any of his family in the eye again. He blamed them all for what happened to him, forcing him into the military and trying to kill the person he really was. He began wasting his life away staying in bed for days on end and managed to get hooked on his pain medication, doctor and pharmacy hopping to get more and more to top up the habit. Then one night when his father was hosting a big-wig politicians dinner in their lavish beach front property, Luka overdose on his medication and straight vodka in the bathroom. But he didn't manage to succeed before his mother found him. It would have been a rude shock for all the fuckstick pollies invading the place anyway.
After that, Luka couldn't stay in Australia. He was miserable and didn't know who he was, or why he even was anymore. The first chance he got, he forged his father's handwriting and wrote himself a cheque for $100,000 Aussie dollars, cashed it, transferred it to a newly opened account, and booked a flight to New York. At the very least, Jett deserved some company going through what he was. But Luka could never have anticipated what he witnessed late one night when he got to the hospital. The spinal injury unit was quiet and dark, Luka had been hanging out in a waiting room most of the day so he could get some privacy later after visiting hours. He had been standing just outside the hospital room, listening in on the conversation Jett was having with Molly Pierce, and then watched from just around the corner as she did something to him called an Embrace, which looked suspiciously like something a vampire would do. If Luka thought his brain was fucked up before then, it was nothing on how it ended up after eavesdropping on something he was probably never supposed to witness...
Within a vampire bloodline known as The Kindred, seven vampire clans are collectively joined, forming the largest sect of vampires called the Camarilla, and survive through the Masquerade, disguising themselves as humans. Camarilla policy is that vampires should try to fit in with and hide from the rest of humanity, as to easily feed on them. For this reason, they created a web of lies and misinformation, called the Masquerade, to make the public believe that supernatural beings like vampires could not possibly exist. The Camarilla also believes that the only way the vampire species can survive in these modern nights is if it unite. Any breach of the Masquerade by any vampire risks exposing the entire race. Both viewpoints are fundamentally opposed by the Sabbat, an opposing sect to the Camarilla. The Camarilla also enforces the Eldest as ruling class over the younger vampires. The seven clans of the Camarilla are Ventrue, Brujah, Malkavian, Toreador, Gangrel, Tremere and Nosferatu. When a human is turned by a Kindred vampire, it is known as the Embrace, the vampire siring the human to embrace them into their own bloodline.
Each city has a ruler, a "Prince" who enforces the laws of The Masquerade that govern them to protect their anonymity. A clan is a group of vampires "related" by blood; i.e. the vampiric equivalent of an extended family or lineage. A clan is usually a large group, acknowledged widely in the vampiric society. Each clan nurture their own characteristics and traits, and each clan has its strengths and weaknesses. Often the clans do not always get along with certain clans such as the Brujah and the Ventrue actually hating one another. Each clan within a given area has a representative, a Primogen, who is usually the eldest and most powerful member of the clan, who attends the leader or prince's advisory council. This status also grants the character social advantages and greater power than being a normal member of their clan.
